About The Workshop
Explore the infinite range of black and white in this weekend of single-color linocut relief printmaking techniques. All experience levels are welcome.
Linocut relief printmaking is great fun because it is an extremely flexible, accessible form of printmaking. It can be accomplished using simple materials and tools in the most basic studio setting and yet allows an infinite range of expression from exquisitely detailed rendering to bold expressionist mark making. This two-day workshop will lead students through the processes of designing, transferring, carving and printing their own single color, limited edition linoleum block prints.
We will begin by examining several different carving materials, types of cutting tools, and printing apparatus before focusing on creating prints of the students’ own designs on mounted linoleum blocks. We will be studying examples of linocut technique, identifying signature styles and cutting techniques of various artists, and experimenting with applying them to the students’ own designs. After finishing the designs, we will take time to practice carving techniques on sample blocks. Students will then be instructed in transferring their images to their block and then carving. The second day will allow participants time to finish carving in preparation for printing an edition of their own. Students will have the opportunity to try several different approaches to printing.
Each participant will be asked to bring a basic black and white design of their own. There will be time to refine the design somewhat based on the linocut techniques we will be looking at. Maximum block size is 6” x 8” and designs can be any size up to this dimension.
Students should bring their own basic set of small-scale wood or lino carving tools or purchase a set from the studio on the first day of the workshop.
About The Instructor
Diane Sandall, local printmaker and long-time Eugene resident, has become proficient in many forms of making art, from woodcarving, ceramics, and blacksmithing to drawing and printmaking. She originally moved to Eugene to continue pursuing her BFA at the University of Oregon, concentrating on ceramics. After many years of producing ceramic dinnerware and sculpture she felt a need to change how she worked and subsequently reinvigorated an early love of relief printmaking. She is completely comfortable in declaring it is the best artistic decision she ever made and happily continues to produce original limited editions of her woodcuts and linocuts.
